So, if you give your "two cents" in, but someone asks you "a penny for your thoughts", where does the other penny go?

To the 'take a penny - leave a penny' jar for those without a clue. Deep South pay attention, I said for those without a clue.

Since we are asking "inane questions" Where does the expression, "blowing smoke up my ass" come from? And please answer honestly, don't blow smoke up my ass.

I'm guessing Shooter would be the expert to consult on things up one's ass.

[quote637718a="baildog"]Since we are asking "inane questions" Where does the expression, "blowing smoke up my ass" come from? And please answer honestly, don't blow smoke up my ass.[/quote637718a]

From the time of its "discovery" in 1492 by European explorers until the mid 19th century tobacco was considered a panacea by most Western societies. In addition to its more common use as a recreationally smoked drug, it was applied to the skin to heal wounds, introduced into the eyes, ears, nose and mouth to treat infections and diseases, inserted vaginally to treat "female" problems and...yes, inserted into the intestinal canal to both treat physical problems "down there" as well as to assess whether someone was really dead (smoke blown up the rectum generally elicited a physiological response from the living - but not so much from the dead).

Thus, [i637718a]blowing smoke up someone's ass[/i637718a] is a way of saying that you're either: a) saying something gratuitously nice to distract them (as in the first use of tobacco in the butt to treat medical problems), or b) simply trying to get a reaction out of them (as in the second).

You're welcome.

Fact was, you only heard rumors as you skipped gym class to hang out in forest preserves (with your car backed into the parking space).

If a word in the dictionary was mispelled, how would we know?

You would know when you tried to use it on this forum and the grammar police beat you mercilessly for spelling it incorrectly.

Chimney Sweeps in Olde England used that phrase to let the owners of the homes whose chimneys they were sweeping that they should put the fire out well in advance of their arrival. "Don't blow smoke up my ass. ." since they would have to enter the chimney ass first. . .

Firstly, you get docked 15 points in Life for using the phrase Olde England improperly, it should always be stated as Ye Olde England.

Secondly, blowing smoke up my ass reminds me of what a certain owner was doing with a donkey at the Rounder's Fan Fest a few years back.
