Guy Fawkes Day 2014- I will be celebrating Guy Fawkes day this year by telling an amazing and true tale...The Little Known True Story of Guy Fawkes Day-
In the year 1972 aspiring funk bassist Guy Fawkes hatched an elaborate insidious plan to blow up Parliament-Funkadelic. P. Funk, as they were known at the time, was the most influential and successful funk band of the time and, along with Earth, Wind & Fire they dominated the funk scene.
Now Guy Fawkes was, orininaly, a good friend of George Clinton- Founding member of George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, and he was all but assured the prominent funk band position of lead bassist but was replaced at the last minute by William "Bootsy" Collins. Collins, whose trademark star shaped sunglasses would shape the band's signature sound just as much as his catchy baselines.
Guy Fawkes was seething with rage at his omission from P. Funk and, in a moment of pure rage, decided that the only way to secure himself a position within the funk scene was to blow up some or all of the 37 active members of Parliament. As he formed his insidious plan piece after piece fell into place, and finally his opportunity presented itself.
On November 5th 1972 Parliament-Funkadelic and James Brown were set to co-headline a concert in Britain's own Westminster Abby and Guy Fawkes would blow up the concert with over 30 barrels of gun powder.
As Guy Fawkes guarded the gunpowder bomb he had placed he was surprised to see none other than Bootsy Collins walk into the room. Due to the obscene number of sequins on his suit Bootsy was only able to change clothes in a darkened room and he had wandered in to get dressed for the concert. Immediately Bootsy realized what was set to occur and determined there was only one way to stop the slighted Guy Fawkes- A bass off. He brought out the two bass guitars that he always kept on his person and challenged Guy.
The two men pulled out all the stops and played furiously, and at first they seemed to be at a dead heat. Bootsy knew he had one last chance to defeat Guy and on the spot broke out a new tune he had been working on. That song would go on to be known around the world as "Flashlight" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0ZGNGBNIL8 . Stunned Guy Fawkes admitted defeat and set about dismantling his bomb.
Over the years the Story has been distorted to the point that it now barley resembles the Funky truth, but now you know the true story- and knowing is half the battle.
