Hosting Death Valley in Fargo on a cold but sunny day. 2 similar teams with strengths running the ball and stopping the run. Death Valley plays the short completion game on O getting nearly 200 targets to TE Stone while Fargo mixes it up a bit more. No real history between the clubs, but we will give this one the full treatment.

We got good field position but went 3 and out and pinned them at the 3 but RB Lyons had 71 yards on 9 carries and TE Stone grabbed the TD on 3rd and goal. We converted a few 3rd downs and ran it efficiently but took a sack in the RZ and could only come away with 3 and this game was already in the 2nd quarter.

DVY moved the ball a bit and ended up pinning us at our 4 yard line we got out of our end but couldn't convert the 3rd and short. DVY moved it again with Lyons adding more conversions to his tally but could just grab 3 points. S Lindsay took the KR to the house to tie things up with under 4 minutes left in the half. Lyons added a 60 yard catch and run to his game but our D held in the RZ and DVY went back up by 3. Nothing doing with our 2 minute drill as we were suffering uncharacteristic pass pressure.

Would we stop Lyon in the 2nd half or would he get up to 350 yards seemed to be the question?

We got he stop at midfield but again failed to connect on our deeper throws due to pressure and gave it back. Another punt from DVY and we were moving but Terhorst threw a pick at midfield and DVY was set up in long FG range and after Stone got another conversion on 3rd and medium they extended the lead to 6.

A penalty got us over a 3rd and long and our own run game picked up some nice gains to set up up at their 20 with 9 minutes left. We failed on the 3rd and goal from the 6 (familiar!) and settled for 3 with 5 minutes left. Lyons continued to pick up 3rd and mediums on the ground against our Tampa-2 but we got the ball back at our 20 down 3 with just over 2 minutes left and promptly went 4 and out to end the game.

Well I think we got outcoached in this one. We had a bit too much faith in being able to stop the run with our personnel and completely ignored the possibility of DVY running on 3rd and medium (8/16 overall). Particularly on the edges they were just gashing us.

Our O put up a stinker getting 1 YAC per catch and barely over 60% completion rating, probably should have ran it more ourselves and we didn't see the pass pressure coming at all. TE Evans and WR Dawkins both were pretty awful, I thought we would be able to beat up on their CBs but that was obviously not the case. It was fitting that a Terhorst INT was the difference as that has been an issue all season despite his top 8 avoid interceptions bar which means it is likely on me.

That said, a poor RZ performance by each team means things could have gone either way.

A good season from us but again Terhorst just doesn't have much magic and a better gameplan beat our D in the playoffs. We have consistently been a good 10-12 win team with him but never really had a dominant offense and can't seem to get over the hump.

Depending on what the renegotiation numbers look like, we could go for 1 final run with this squad or try to offload the many talented 28-31 year olds we have. We overpaid for a couple of them so will likely will try 1 more time but who knows.

Best of luck to DVY moving forward!

Thanks for the amazing write up Ushikawa! I really enjoyed the nuance and detail in your descriptions.
That was a real nail biter to use a cliche. I really struggled to convert in the red zone, as you noticed, which has been a problem all year. The KR TD was especially demoralizing because of our red zone performance this year.
At the end of the day I agree with your assessment that the Terhorst int in the 4th was a backbreaker. One Rylan Hahn breakaway and its also a very different game. I think if we play that game 10 times it goes 5-5. With Al Kelly being the highest rated non kicker in the game I think you certainly have another great chance at a run next year.

Thanks again for the fantastic write up, next time we play I'll do a good write up as well. Good luck on the upcoming season!!!

Jander
