The Phantoms continue to take steps to build their defensive front for the future, today signing defensive end Winston Harper to a four-year extension worth $72.73 million — $12 million guaranteed, according to theCFL.us, the league’s official website. The team has since officially announced the signing and confirmed that it is a four-year deal.

After being franchised at $16+ million by Tennessee, Harper would have been a free agent at the end of the season. Harper had let the Militia know that he was not interested in signing a long term deal and was looking for a new home. Atlantic City, which had a similar issue with LB Dominic Castillo, and Tennessee recently completed a swap of the players.

Harper confirmed the deal in a couple of Tweets Tuesday morning, writing that: ‘We have something special brewing in Atlantic City and I’m happy that I’ll be a part of it.”

In a statement from the team, head coach Roosevelt Ensign said: “Winston is a key piece of what we are building on the defensive side of the ball and we are excited that he’ll be with us for four years. He has been relentless in his approach to the game and his passion for winning is contagious. This is a great day for the Phantoms”

A two-time second team all-league selection, Harper joins defensive tackle Brenden Maloney as cornerstones of the defense line.

In related news, former Atlantic City star Dominic Castillo capitalizes on Tennessee's need for star power on the field and signs a 4 year deal with the Militia. Begrudgingly he made the move to strong-side linebacker so the Militia could always have their two best players on the field. Middle linebacker Dana de los Santos is thrilled to have a new "bash brother" at his side. This should help shore up the Militia's porous run defense from a year ago and both linebackers are exceptional in coverage.

Glad to see it worked out for both teams.
