2050 CFL Rookie Draft

1.21 S Orlando Stoffers, North Carolina State
6-0, 205 lbs
Very High Volatility (95)
Underrated

Image

Stoffers wasn't my 1st choice, that was S Travis Garner. That being said though I am happy with Stoffers as my 1st pick. Stoffers looks like an excellent Run Defender and he's very smart with a 45 Solecismic. 4.44 speed and other high combine scores as well contribute to why I picked him.

Endurance could be higher but he has a high Volatility and is Underrated to my scouts, so I'm expecting him to change for the better. He should with excellent combine scores, some Red and others were blue, the only black score was in Position drill at 44, which is still respectable.

Now that he's on the team, Estimates have him at 39/73. That would be awesome! Excited to see what he turns up like Ex Week 2.

2.21 CB Raymond Barry, Stanford
5-9, 184 lbs
Very High Volatility (81)
Hard to Read

Image

Another pick where I came short of my original target, RB Miles Porcaro. He ended up being picked very early in the 2nd round.

Raymond Barry is an interesting player, he looks to be an excellent Run Defender and Punishing Hitter.. And he's a CB. But he's also only 5-9 and 184lbs so that may be a concern. He looks like a slot corner.

Another fast player acquired at 4.40. He also had other great combine scores too. Bump and Run Defense looks low at the moment, which is his only low bar skill. Looks like an average special teamer and his Solecismic is average, he could go either way when Ex Week 2 hits.

For now he's 23/60. That would be a solid 2nd if he stays high.

3.4 WR Bubba "Gump" Harrow
5-11, 195 lbs
Low Volatility (20)
Not Interviewed

Pick 3.4 was acquired in a trade for C Alfred Smith with Atlanta.

At this point in the draft I had a lot of great options to choose from. My 3 choices were Gump, DT Tommy Marsh, and OLB Wayne Maxwell.(Whom I picked later.)

Bubba "Gump" Harrow is yet another fast and smart player, (4.41) and Solecismic(38) He had an amazing Position Drill score of 65. His route running and avoid drops are impeccable. I compared him to my current #1 receiver Stan "The Man" Wilt, and Gump beat him in every drill except for agility. So I think he may be even better than him, the bars say otherwise at this moment.

His only negative is Endurance right now. Getting Downfield looks suspiciously low for a 4.41 receiver, but we'll see. He's a perfect fit for my short pass offense regardless of GD.

30/52. I think he's going to a steal in this draft after Ex Week 2 comes. His Volatility is only 20 so I can't hope for too much a dramatic change though. He will be rated in the "Good" Category more than likely.

3.21 OLB Wayne Maxwell
6-4, 256 lbs
Very High Volatility (80)
Not Interviewed

Image

Building Defense again in the 3rd round with Wayne Maxwell. He has great bars overall, Run Defending looks amazing, Cover skills are great and Pass Rushing skills are good too. You guessed it, he's fast too at 4.56, great for a LB.

His only knock is Endurance, seems to be a theme in this draft. He will more than likely be a 2 down linebacker with such low endurance. I don't even think Very High Volatility will change that too much, but I can hope. Regardless of how much playing time he has, he'll be an impact player when he plays.

26/62.

4.3 RB Darnell Arrowsmith
5-10, 211
High Volatility (60)
Not Interviewed

Pick 4.3 was acquired in a trade with Atlanta for C Alfred Smith.

Image

Arrowsmith was mainly picked for his receiving skills and punt returning skills. Right now his running skill bars are pretty low, but his Solecismic is High at 26 so that should increase his Hole Recognition. He has decent speed at 4.54.

As a RB he's currently 26/39. That being said, if his running stats are terrible, I can change him to a WR and he would be at 23/47 currently. This was unexpected until JJ suggested it.

Yet another High Volatility player that could be better or worse than his estimate.

6.21 OLB/DE Gabriel Karpel
6-4, 257 lbs
Very High Volatility (87)
Not Interviewed

Image

After having 5 picks in the top 99, Honolulu waited until 181 for their next pick, that ended up being Gabriel Karpel. He was originally an OLB, but I moved him over to DE. His coverage skills are nonexistent, which is why I moved him.

He has great speed at 4.61, which is very fast for a DE. Also very smart with a Solecismic of 42. Looks to have good Endurance, Run Defending looks low but he was chosen as a Pass Rushing Specialist.

Yet another very high Volatility player in this draft.
Originally 20/35 at OLB, he's now 25/47 at DE.

7.21 WR/KR Maurice Bush
5-10, 182 lbs
Very Low Volatility (4)
Not Interviewed

Image

There's not too much to say about Bush, he was drafted to be a kick returner and because he has excellent special teams. We'll see if he makes the best 53.

14/23.

Post Draft Thoughts

This draft did not go ideal for me, having missed both targets in the first two rounds. But I'm happy with the players I've selected. I was able to get very fast players, (40 times: 4.40, 4.41, 4.44, 4.54, 4.56, 4.61 and 4.72 for the 7th rounder) I was able to get some very smart players as well.

Having 5 of top 99 picks, I was able to address some needs and select some surprise players, like Bubba Harrow. I never even targeted a WR in this draft, but you never know how the draft may go.

I think I set up the team nicely for the future with this draft. For now I'm projecting 3 defensive starters, 1 starting WR, 1 RB/WR hybrid, a pass rushing specialist and a Kick Returner.

The defensive starters are all Run Defending beasts, which will eventually help my 20th ranked rushing defense from 2049. Passing defense last year was ranked 3rd overall. Bubba Gump is going to be a great fit in my Short Pass offense, he will form a great 1-2 combo with Stan Wilt.

The Draft Review seems to agree and my draft grade is an A this year, a solid improvement on last years B+ grade.
