Well let's take a look at the top 5.

1.1 Texas selected - DE [player]Dustin Cineux[/player]
After the trade for a QB with a career QB rating of around 70, they felt that QB was not a pressing need any longer. Well, with that trade I thought they would go CB here and have arguably the best corner tandem in the league. They instead went with the best DE in the draft. Dustin is not only going to be a beast at getting in the QB's face, but he will also be solid against the run. You could not go wrong with any of the top 3 defensive talents in this draft, which brings us to...

1.2 Tampa Bay selected - CB [player]Mo Sanford[/player]
With 7 holes to fill on the defensive unit, they needed an impact player on defense. A star CB can make a bigger impact on a defense with so many holes, where a stud DT allows the good players around him to perform at a higher level. This was a smart choice for a defense with many needs.

1.3 Brooklyn selected - QB [player]Brent Caputo[/player]
Brooklyn could have picked just about anyone and they would have improved their team. The Tigers felt this was the time to get their franchise QB. They had their pick of QB's and went with Caputo who will be ready to start sooner then any other QB in the draft. Caputo and Garrison will be compared for their whole careers, but Caputo fits Brooklyn's situation better.

1.4 Fargo selected - DT [player]Brian Kellett[/player]
Fargo had half of a damn fine defense coming into the draft. Kellett will be a beast in the middle. I doubt he will be moved outside even though he could probably make the transition. He and DT [player]Andre Baker[/player] will allow solid MLB [player]Chad Stadler[/player] to be free to roam around. This pick is a great player who is going into a great fit for him.

1.5 Albany selected - QB [player]Kent Garrison[/player]
This was a bit of a surprise. The Crows look like a team that should compete for a playoff spot and more with some improvements at a few positions. They decided to get a QB to groom under [player]Norm Fisk[/player], which is good because Garrison will need plenty of time to learn the game at this level. He will never be able to throw the long ball, and may be considered by most as a system QB. However, I think his upside is higher then Caputo's, but he had to go to the right situation to tote the clipboard before getting beaten up, and this is that situation.

Here are my thoughts on picks 6 through 10.

1.6 Memphis selected - DT [player]Bert Morlando[/player]
Morlando is an interesting paradox. He looks to be a solid run stuffing, lineman occupying DT, but can he do all of this at this level with a 5' 10" 287 lbs frame. This could be a solid pick or a combine star who can't make it in the CFL.

1.7 Huntington Beach selected - OLB [player]Joey Osborne[/player]
Joey is going to be a star in the CFL were there are few stars at the linebacker position. He can do everything well as a linebacker. This is a good pick for the Capitalists as their other needs are mainly offensive line which can be addressed later in this draft.

1.8 Chicago selected - WR [player]Cornell Jarvis[/player]
This pick has me scratching my head. There were better receivers on the board and I feel that WR was not the position that needed the most improvement on the Hitmen. In a 3-4 defense, those nose tackles that can clog up the middle are key. The Hitmen have an aging nose tackle [player]Matthew D'Ottavio[/player] who could have mentored a replacement. Time will tell if I am wrong on this one.

1.9 Las Vegas selected - WR [player]Dwight Terrell[/player]
The most talented WR in the draft, but will not be very productive in the lineup for probably 2 or 3 seasons as he is very raw. However, he will grow into his role just as young QB [player]Morris Moore[/player] grows into his as well. This will not pay off for a few seasons, but should be looked back on as a solid choice.

1.10 Oregon selected - S [player]Tyrell Harding[/player]
Harding can probably make the move to corner in the CFL, so it will be interesting to see what Oregon does with him. A stud from Siena is very good in any coverage scheme and amazing against the run. That could be what keeps him from moving to CB, his ability against the run may be too valuable at safety to move him. Great pick as he enters a secondary with superstar CB [player]Charles Johnson[/player] and they should only make each other better at whatever position Harding plays.

Good stuff, I think you are right on Garrison. Will you do more and maybe a draft grade recap by team or division or something when the draft is over?

I will see what I have time to do.

Now on to picks 11-15.

1-11 Shreveport selected - ILB [player]Kelvin Hartman[/player]
Shreveport was desperately lacking a MLB in their 4-3 scheme. Hartman will come in and start day one. He has an unbelievable ability to get to the ball carrier and bring him down. Hartman has the raw talent to develop into a solid all around MLB, but will mainly be a run stopping force for his first few seasons for a team that gave up over 130 yards a game on the ground. Hartman is the only first round talent at MLB in this draft and the Pride needed him.

1-12 Honolulu selected - S [player]Derek Schulz[/player]
This Seminole has safety strength on a cornerback's frame. The Blue Pacific will probably convert Schulz to CB at this level. The only knock on him from some scouts told me, they do not like his zone skills. However, I think the raw talent is there with the right coaching he will not be a liability in that area. Derek excels at everything else though. Wide receiver hands, hits like a linebacker, and can blanket the receiver in man coverage. Honolulu already has 2 solid safeties and a pretty good corner. Now with Schulz on board, they will have quite a solid secondary indeed.

1-13 Tulsa selected - G [player]Anthony King[/player]
Angie Dickenson has played for the Talons for only two seasons and has been sacked 63 times and the Talons were one of the worst 4 teams at allowing sacks each of those years. Muddy Waters Raffo had 12 TD's his rookie season and 11 his sophmore year in the league. He has not gotten 10 in a season in the last 5 seasons since. King is easily the best guard in this draft, and the tackle position is pretty deep without one guy standing out from the crowd. King will come in and be amazing opening up holes for Raffo, but will need to learn the finer points of pass protection. He will not make Angie sweat anymore then he already does when he drops back, but it will take a little while before he fully develops his skills there in pass protection.

1-14 Arizona selected - WR [player]Andre McCarthy[/player]
Andre is a big body at the WR position and he uses this to always seem to find a way to come up with the ball on those super important third down passing plays. While he not as polished as Jarvis coming out of NIU, I feel that McCarthy is the better talent. He is going to a team without a wide receiver and with a quarterback that could retire in training camp. You have to think the Outlaws were not sold on QB Garner and have their eye on another arm later in the draft, because they cannot think [player]Kelvin Bosela[/player] is the answer when Mathias calls it a career. It is hard to pick up a quality wide out in this league though and maybe they feel they can plug their other holes easier then they can find a receiver.

1-15 Boston selected - RB [player]Cary Fox[/player]
[player]Toby Radke[/player] was not the same player he was in his last season three years ago. That was the last time Boston had anyone resembling a RB on the roster. That was also the year that [player]Dwayne Bridges[/player] snapped a streak of 4 straight seasons with a QB rating of over 100. He has not cracked that barrier in the last three seasons. There has been debate heading into this draft about who is the best RB Fox or Kingsbury. I believe Kingsbury has a higher ceiling, but Fox is more seasoned and proven. Cary should have no problem coming in to camp as the number 1 RB and be able to handle those duties as a rookie. However, he is not a receiving threat out of the backfield, but the right offensive coordinator can get the most out of him and hide his shortcomings in that area.

Now the tackles started coming off the board.

1-16 Seattle selected - T [player]Gerald Tyler[/player]
While Tyler was the smallest of the 3 tackles considered to be tied for the best tackle prospect in the draft, he was not the fastest or most agile. However, he was the smartest. This will allow him to learn the playbook and be in the right spot on each and every play. He is also the most developed. Seattle needs to two tackles out of this draft. I see Tyler as better off staying at the RT position as his build and strength are not suited for the prototypical left tackle. I think Goodhart would have been a better fit for the Thunderbirds as he should be able to man that left tackle position easily.

1-17 Hartford selected - T [player]Ross Goodhart[/player]
Michigan QB's and RB's have had it easy the last three years because of Goodhart on one end of the line and the next pick Goolsbury at the other end. Ross will make the move to LT for the Attack and will be a beast there for years to come. Spearman may have liked a tackle that is better in the running game, but Oberg could not be happier to schedule less time in the whirlpool. Goodhart will look a bit awkward on running plays, but his brute strength will make up, on most occasions, for his lack of technique. Opposing defenses should be ready to see Ross at LT for the next 10 plus seasons.

1-18 Detroit selected - T [player]Sammy Goolsby[/player]
The other Wolverine tackle, Sammy is the last of this trio of tackles taken in a row. Sammy is very nimble at his position, but I do not think he has the upper body strength to stay at LT in the CFL. The Vampires have a decent right tackle with nobody manning the left tackle position. Springer might make the move to LT, so Sammy can slide in at RT, but I am not sure if that will happen. The shocking part about this pick is that DT [player]Mike Strong[/player] was still on the board and the Vampires passed. Detroit runs the 3-4 defense and the nose tackle is key piece to that running like it should. Mike Strong was one of two (Kellett was the other) defensive tackles that could man down that nose tackle position and excel at it. Offensive tackle was a deep position in this draft and the talent still there in the middle of the second round will easily be better then any potential nose tackle talent there. This was the wrong decision that will make Detroit wait another year to find their NT when they could have had both NT and OT this year.

1.19 Honolulu selected - DT [player]Mike Strong[/player]
The Blue Pacific have got to be glad to see him still sitting there at 19. Strong walks into the best situation for a rookie DT in the league being able to line up right next to [player]Eric Shannon[/player] every down. Honolulu will be destroying the inside of opposing offensive lines for years to come. Combine that with a solid and young secondary and it will not be easy to score on the Blue Pacific for some time. They may have considered a QB or RB here, but I cannot blame them for not wanting to pass on the chance to pair Strong up with Shannon.

1.20 Oregon selected - RB [player]Ted Kingsbury[/player]
Another team with two first round picks who also went safety with their first on, Oregon gets arguably the best running back in the draft at 20. The Ice have to be grinning to see this guy fall into their lap. Not an area of need, and they would have been more then happy to get Mike Strong at this spot, they could not pass on this value. The only question anyone had about Ted, was if he could handle the rigors of toting the rock series after series, game after game. This ECU Pirate will be a star, and once he gets on a professional diet and workout regimen he will prove that he can handle the load. With 4 of the first 41 picks in the draft, the Ice needed to make the most of it and so far they certainly have.

These last two of this round will be 6 picks each.

1.21 El Paso selected - CB [player]J.R. Rambo[/player]
After Sanford, there was a big drop in talent at the CB position. Those two safeties taken earlier will would make better corners then Rambo, the second college CB taken. J.R. will be a fine player and should start for the Rockets for a while, but he is not a shutdown corner. With El Paso already having two serviceable corners, I would have guessed that this is where DE [player]Vincent Sawyer[/player] would have come off the board. The Rockets need help on the offensive line, but they can still get that later in this draft. They only have one defensive end on their roster right now. Not sure about this one folks.

1.22 Albany selected - CB [player]Andy Poston[/player]
The Crows have had the most draft picks made of any team over the last 5 seasons. Honestly, you could go back farther or shorter and they would probably still have selected the most players via the draft. This would make one believe that they might have an idea of what they are doing. However, they draft this combine warrior Poston. Sure, he had the longest broad jump recorded for a corner, but look at his play on the field. At Cincinnati, he was picked on by talented and not so talented wide outs. Does he have the physical skills to play the position? Yes. Does he have the brains or drive to learn how to play up to his physical ability? I highly doubt it. Even if he learns something about playing corner, he does not have the hands to turn that into interceptions. The Crows really should have went wide receiver here.

1.23 Las Vegas selected - RB [player]Phil Vandersommen[/player]
The Rounders obviously went into this draft wanting to put weapons around their young QB Moore. Phil is not the type of running back that will ever be able to pound it between the tackles. This 5'6" Volunteer is a scat back in every sense of the word. One thing to note about Phil's game, is that he cannot catch a pass to save his life. This is normally a requirement for scat backs to make it easier to get them the ball in the open field, he makes up for this by being pretty good at reading blitzes and blocking the right guy.

1.24 Denver selected - FB [player]Brady Kaplan[/player]
Brady is a beast with or without the football. Depending on the situation, you either have another offensive lineman essentially in the backfield, or a guy who can pound the ball straight up the middle for those short yardage situations. Kaplan is an amazing athlete, the only problem is finding a way to get the most out of him as the FB position has become less utilized in this day and age. I could have seen them try for QB Garner here as the two quarterbacks on their roster are getting pretty old, but not a bad pick at all.

1.25 San Antonio selected - WR [player]Pete Stevens[/player]
I don't care for this pick. Other needs for this team, and while the Stingers offensive line is strong, it is not getting any younger. Pete's agent decided that going to the combine would hurt his player's stock and it probably would have. Stevens built up amazing stats in the Red Raiders pass heavy offense and that was enough to make him a first round pick. They must had not liked what they heard from [player]Bryce Heise[/player] in their interview.

1.26 Albany selected - T [player]Nate Sprehe[/player]
With their third and final first round pick this year, Albany picked up a tackle. [player]Richard McKenzie[/player] is getting up there in years despite being pretty durable and effective still. Nate is very raw and will hope to learn behind Richard for at least a season. He has the build of a left tackle but does not have the wanted upper body strength. Should be very good in the running game but learning fine art of pass protection may take a while. Another team that [player]Bryce Heise[/player] must have scared off, he would seem to fit the Crows 4-3 defense.

The last picks of the first round.

1.27 Atlantic City selected - T [player]Billy Joe Lareche[/player]
Billy Joe is a run blocker specialist that is not that bad in pass protection. He should stay at RT and will be more then adequate there for the Phantoms. However, I think they should have went [player]Vincent Sawyer[/player] and picked up a quality RT in the second or maybe even the third round. I think the drop in talent at DE after Sawyer is bigger then the drop in talent at T after Lareche. Either one would have beeen a good pick for them, just not sure if this is the right first move for them.

1.28 Arizona selected - QB [player]Justin Garner[/player]
The Outlaws have to be amazed and delighted that Garner is still here at 28 for them. I thought he could go as high as 14 at Arizona's other first round pick. Justin is going to be a solid starting QB in the CFL. Not an MVP type guy, but also not a guy who will lose you games. He is not afraid to hold on to the ball and run with it, but as a whole he is pretty raw. He will need to be hanging around Mathias as much as he can for as long as Mathias stays around.

1.29 Charleston selected - DT [player]Bryce Heise[/player]
The Monitors just got this pick as it was on the clock in a pretty big trade. They shipped MVP RB [player]Archie Chasser[/player] to his third team. Archie was about to start the last year of his contract and rightfully wanted to become handsomely rewarded. Charleston has been running the rarely seen 2-4 defense as they have not had anyone at nose tackle. Bryce had obviously scared off a few teams with questions of his durability and stamina. He will be the man in Charleston and will be good when he is on the field. It is just anyone's guess how often that will be.

1.30 New Orleans selected - G [player]Herb Rauch[/player]
Having failed in their attempt to be the first CFL team to three-peat, the Raging Horde want to get back what they feel is theirs. New Orleans is hoping Herb's sheer strength will be able to open holes for [player]Jerome Strickland[/player] who makes the most of the holes he gets. You just hope that he can learn the finer points of offensive line play. If he does not develop those skills, they may regret passing over DE [player]Vincent Sawyer[/player] who also would have filled a need for the Raging Horde.

1.31 Baltimore selected - DE [player]Vincent Sawyer[/player]
Vincent is a guy who did not wow scouts at the combine after putting up stellar numbers at Boise State. Mind you his combine was not bad, but you would hope for better to help justify his stats in a Mid-Major conference. This fills a big need for Baltimore who will probably now shift to a 4-3 after having to use DT depth at end. This was the best way for them to better their defensive front seven, as there was not a LB of equal ability to Sawyer at this spot for them to stay in a 3-4.

1.32 Tucson selected - S [player]Ronnie Dixon[/player]
The champs pick up a player who held out of the combine. Dixon was really good for Texas Tech. The defense did not get to rest much, as the Red Raiders' high flying, high pace offense did not stay on the field long. Dixon proved he can hold up to the rigors of having to perform series after series without much rest in between. He goes to a Toros secondary that needs help. Tucson will have to get him signed an into camp to see if he can make the transition to corner or stay at safety. The Toros only hope he can perform like he has in college against CFL offenses.

This brings to an end the first round analysis.

Really great stuff.

I can't really argue with your analysis of my pick, I wavered between the tackle and Strong.

Chicago is feeling the love.... :(

I just didnt see the value of a DT here based on the talent out there. I liked Strong but not at this spot. Wouldve loved to move down. And i picked who i thought was the best WR and best value at 1-8. Guess we will get to see whether i botched the pick once we come out of camp and see the WR and DT Strong.

It could have been worse. Just think if you would have drafted J.R. Cotton in the 1st round.
