We are starting with the division housing the reigning CFL Champs, the Ring of Fire.

[b2052ab9]Tucson Toros 2016 (13-3):[/b2052ab9]

They did not have much of a draft, only three picks, and only one of those was supposed to matter. One draft pick is already released. [player]Ronnie Dixon[/player] was the Toro's only significant pick. He did not go to the combine, but from what they tell me from seeing this kid in camp, he can play. He excels in zone coverage and is no slouch at man or bump and run. They are happy with his hands, and he should hang on to a good bit of passes the he gets a chance at. They really need some help on the defensive side of the ball, and Dixon should provide some of that. They moved around most of their picks this year for future picks.

[u2052ab9]Grade: I ~ Incomplete[/u2052ab9]

[b2052ab9]Las Vegas Rounders 2016 (9-7):[/b2052ab9]

Despite going 9-7, the Rounders had many areas that needed improvement. WR [player]Dwight Terrell[/player] should develop into a top tier wide out in about 3 years, but will see the field plenty during that time. RB [player]Phil Vandersommen[/player] should be an improvement for the team who had the 4th worst yards per carry last season. The below average O-line also contributes to that YPC, and the Rounder spent a couple of late picks on some depth that may pan out on the line. They wasted their 3rd and 4th round picks. Who wants a linebacker [player]Jose Weber[/player] that is useless against the run? FB [player]Bennie Jimoh[/player] is not much of an upgrade over [player]Clay Small[/player] at a position that is not that important any longer. Those picks could have went to offensive and defensive line help and depth as they are not terribly strong or deep there.

[u2052ab9]Grade: B- ~ Quality at the top, but missed chances in the middle[/u2052ab9]

[b2052ab9]
Arizona Outlaws 2016 (7-9):[/b2052ab9]

WR [player]Andre McCarthy[/player] was their first pick and should become an above average CFL receiver, but not much more. I feel QB [player]Justin Garner[/player] can grow into a decent quarterback and be a capable starter in the right system. They also plugged a big hole at safety with [player]Terry Amato[/player]. Great FB pickup to replace the aging [player]Blaine Stovall[/player]. However, when [player]Freddie Mathias[/player] lines up, he will not be too comfortable with the line in front of him.

[u2052ab9]Grade: B ~ [player]Tommie Ding[/player] is not the answer at tackle, and was the only O-lineman they drafted.[/u2052ab9]

[b2052ab9]Honolulu Blue Pacific 2016 (6-10):[/b2052ab9]

They were able to go for the best player available with each pick as the amount of needs this team has does not allow them to focus on one position. [player]Derek Schulz[/player] will be one of the best corners the league has ever seen and the Blue Pacific will be the toughest team to pass the ball against this season. DT [player]Mike Strong[/player] will be solid and give them an amazingly strong middle of the D-Line with [player]Eric Shannon[/player]. [player]Rico Hodson[/player] will be a solid wide out on a team without one. They have 5th and 6th round picks that could start for them. Not really a statement of how good the picks are, but more of how this team was lacking in talent.

[u2052ab9]Grade: A- ~ Disappointed with two of their three 3rd round picks. Sure, you can say they needed to get this or that, but they needed a lot and did not make a reach for anything in the most important 2 rounds.[/u2052ab9]

Were we looking at the same draft class? Can't wait until we discuss all of the great linemen that were picked in those rounds.

[b759222d]Draft Review Grade[/b759222d]: A for effort, but missed when substituting draft theory for what was actually on the board at those picks.

As far as Weber goes, an 11-52 range on Run Defense is acceptable when all of the other bars appear maxed out. After camp run defense turned out to be a 0. Lesson Learned: Don't draft a position your scout is only Fair at, it doesn't seem to work. Weber likely makes the team at a position he was drafted for - backup WLB. Can't find any free agents nor can we sign them when we do, so it's up to the draft to fill our holes.

[b759222d]Draft Review Grade[/b759222d]: A for accuracy. A fair assesment of the value of the pick. We hoped Weber would be better but he still adds value by virtue of the reason he was drafted.

[quote759222d="T McShay"]The below average O-line also contributes to that YPC...[/quote759222d]

:smt017 Do you just make this stuff up? An O-Line with each position rated above average with a cohesion in the top 20% of the league is a below average line? Hmmm. I could agree with old and not very deep but wow, below average? Two of these guys are in the top 10 for all-time pancake blocks despite the stat being tracked after half of their respective careers had passed.

[b759222d]Draft Review Grade[/b759222d]: D, as in Do your homework. Sorry, that's a little harsh, I'm changing it to B, as in a Below average review. :smt112

Jimoh is a considerable upgrade at FB, he can block and play special teams, which is what I look for in a FB. Clay Small was a significant diappointment after being drafted in 2016 and he is the backup straight out of camp. The biggest reason for Jenning's drop over the last few seasons was losing FB [player]Chris Wisdom[/player]. The best RB taken in the draft, Vandersommen, will at least have a steady backfield for years to come as he [sarcasm] potentially [/sarcasm] improves our running game.

[b759222d]Draft Review Grade[/b759222d]: C, for c'mon, are you kidding me? See Weber comments. Picking value above need is the key to a successful draft. A 58-point FB is always better than a 45-point OG, especially when the FB will be an instant upgrade and the OG will fight for a roster spot with undrafted free agent Centers.

Other than that, I applaud your work and can't believe you are trying to tackle a 32-team draft review. Great stuff! :smt038

Thanks for going all out with a league wide draft analysis. I think McCarthy will be a big-time WR and I agree that we really didn't get much help at T in the draft. Missed some chances to get a T, but felt we got great picks instead. I'd say a B is a fair grade.

Good analysis. You know how I know it's a good analysis?

TurfToe doesn't like it. :)

Seriously, great stuff McShay!
