1.1 Honolulu Blue Pacific
T [player]Rickey White[/player]

More then likely, Rickey will move to the left side where he will anchor the QB's blind side for many, many years. White is a solid all around player with no known weaknesses. Some do not care to take an offensive lineman first overall, but I see nothing wrong with it at all. Great pick.

1.2 Memphis Express
RB [player]Marvin Barton[/player]

Wow, Marvin has been always been a coach's heartache and headache. Barton has all the tools and amazing talent that he showed off at the combine. However, he has not been able to put that into production on the field in his 4 years as a Washington Husky. League scouts I have talked to were torn between Marvin becoming a star in this league or taking that very rich rookie contract and not having the desire to play up to his talent. Most analysts and other teams management guessed they would take DE [player]Dexter Humble[/player] here, and Humble would have made the most sense. The drop off in talent at DE after Humble is significantly higher then the drop off of talent at RB after Barton. The Express have many needs and did not get an offer they liked to trade down. I do not care for this pick, but they could have done worse I guess.

1.3 Seattle Starbucks
DT [player]Omar Harvill[/player]

This guy is THE guy for the nose tackle position in Seattle's 3-4 defense. Scouts around the league knew Seattle was crossing their fingers hoping that Harvill could make it to them at this 3rd overall pick. Humble and Harvill should be similar talents in this league, but Harvill is a much better fit for this team. Omar steps into the starting spot at nose tackle and instantly makes the whole defense better.

1.4 Las Vegas Rounders
T [player]Daniel Brandon[/player]

Las Vegas was actively shopping this pick and I am surprised no one made a good enough offer to come up here to pick up DE Humble. Barring a trade, the next pick for Vegas comes up in the middle of the 5th round. This draft was pretty loaded with high quality offensive tackles and Brandon is definitely one of them. Daniel is used to the left tackle position and will most likely stay there now that he is in the CFL. He will upgrade an under performing and aging offensive line once he gets used to the speed of play here at this level.

1.5 Brooklyn Tigers
CB [player]Emmitt Rittenbaum[/player]

New ownership's first draft pick is a solid cover corner. Emmitt will team up with [player]Hugh Fuller[/player] as they will undoubtedly be the best cover tandem in the league that is no threat to pick the ball off. Emmitt will remind fans of Fuller, but he is faster then Fuller. Rittenbaum was an excellent punt returner in college, but is too valuable to the defense to risk injury on returns. Fuller did not miss a game last season, but was not playing near 100% for the entire first half of the season. This may give them more reason to be selective using Rittenbaum as a returner. The Tigers have a lot of needs, but you have to ask yourself is a handful of better then average players worth more then one much better then average player when you know you will still be struggling as a team either way. The Tigers picked the one player, and I tend to agree with them.

More to come later...

Glad to see this back. Was just wondering to myself if you were going to do it again... though I have to admit to being slightly afraid as my 1.14 was a total disaster... lol

Great work as always so far.

Hey McShay, are you working away on your draft review still, or has life reared it's ugly head and made it a no go for this year? If you are going to have to pass on the draft review, I was thinking of trying to get some going through other means, since I think it's a great asset every year. However, since your reviews are always so awesome I wouldn't want to do that if you were going to be putting something out.

My thought was to start a thread and try to get eight contributors to agree to review just one division each, the catch being that it couldn't be a division that owner belonged to. I know its a ton of work to do a draft review, so I thought breaking it up like that might make it more doable and get more people involved. Just a thought.

Everyone is free to discuss as they want to. Yes, real life has been busy this week. I plan on having the first round done and each division done before Preseason is over.

1.6 Huntington Beach Capitalists
WR [player]Frank Pritchett[/player]

Last season, only Boston gained more yards through the air then Huntington Beach did, by a whole 9 yards. The Capitalists did this while having no one player get at least 800 yards receiving. Their yardage and touchdown leader was [player]Eddie Harrigan[/player] who is now in Shreveport and will likely be their 3rd option at WR. Frank comes to a team that needs his services and was willing to pass the ball without a receiving threat. He will undoubtedly be the target of pass defenses for teams playing Huntington Beach, so his numbers may not be what you expect out of this high of a pick for a while. However, his presence will make the rest of the passing game better by taking focus away from them. Pritchett is only behind [player]Joey Greiner[/player] in teams of raw athletic ability, but Frank played in a pro style system at USC and should make the move to the CFL with less of a learning curve.

1.7 Hartford Attack
WR [player]Max Gray[/player]

This league does not have many top talents at the wide receiver position. Many teams go into each and every offseason trying to find one, Tulsa has only had a receiver end the season with more then 850 yards 4 times in it's history with 2 of them coming from [player]Ethan Corwin[/player] in the last 2 seasons. Last season [player]James Oberg[/player] threw more picks then TD's for the first time since his rookie season 15 years ago in 2003. Max gives them a threat in the passing game, they did not have last season. No Attack player had even 500 yards receiving in 2017. Gray was easily the purest route runner in this draft and should perform solidly from day one. Nice pick for a team who is trying to get Oberg one more ring before he hangs up his pads.

1.8 Oregon Ice
WR [player]Joey Greiner[/player]

Joey is the best physical specimen at the wide receiver position in this draft. Some league scouts were concerned about his rawness coming out of Central Connecticut and fear he will take a long time learning a pro playbook and routes. I think he has the physical skills combined with the desire to learn that will lead him to be an amazing wide out in the CFL. Word has it that [player]Glenn Buenaluz[/player] is excited to have a chance to work with Joey and help him get adjusted to the pro game. They should be one of the league's best tandems, if not the best, in just a season or two.

1.9 Tampa Bay Torpedoes
DE [player]Dexter Humble[/player]

I can promise you that Tampa Bay had no idea that Dexter would make it to them at number 9. Arguably the best defensive talent in this draft, it would not have surprised anyone for him to go 1st overall. Tampa Bay tied for the fewest sacks in the league last season, and Dexter should improve that easily. Humble is no slouch against the running game either and makes the most of his wingspan and size at 6'6". The Torpedoes came into this draft with many questions on the defensive front 7 and offensive front 5, but this certainly answers one of those questions, and does so brilliantly.

1.10 Arizona Outlaws
T [player]Bo Loucks[/player]

Bo is a very smart player and is very adapt at protecting the quarterback's blind side. The Outlaws starter for most of last season [player]Tommie Ding[/player] gave up 11 sacks in 12 games, all 12 were starts, Bo should improve upon that even in his rookie year. Loucks was a 4 year starter at Colorado State and will not take as long as most rookie lineman to get adjusted to playing at this level and speed. Bo is not the best tackle to run behind and you normally expect a complete package at tackle with the 10th overall pick, but there were only 2 of those in this draft, and they were gone before pick number 5. The Outlaws were just a victim of circumstance as they were probably expecting one of those 2 tackles or 3 receivers to still be here at this pick. Again, Bo should start from day one for the Outlaws and perform very well as long as they do not expect to run behind him often.

1.11 Chicago Hitmen
DT [player]Freddie Hartley[/player]

Chicago knew they needed to get a nose tackle for their 3-4 this offseason. Sources in their front office tell me they felt [player]Mercury Gil[/player] was not worth going after as he was asking too much to be a 1 or 2 year solution / stop gap. Freddie certainly has the upper body strength to succeed at nose tackle, he does not have the typical size one expects at that spot. While Hartley was in a 4-3 at Alabama he was always fooled on screen plays and never seemed to know what was going on. However, moving to the nose in a 3-4 means every play he can concentrate on attacking up the middle and trying to occupy two offensive lineman so the linebackers can better do their jobs. The Hitmen defense did fairly well last season with an aging and unproductive [player]Matthew D'Ottavio[/player] at nose, Freddie should make the whole defense better then it was last year.

1.12 Shreveport Pride
S [player]Carlton Newsome[/player]

The Pride have two solid safeties already on their roster, so this pick is for Carlton to move to corner, where he should do very well. Newsome had an amazing combine and is the prototypical corner when you look at his speed and agility. Carlton was an amazing playmaker for the Bruins and knows what he is doing on the field. The only hiccup for Carlton playing corner is that some receivers will be able to take advantage of Carlton's size. He is only 5'8" but is amazingly strong for his build. He should be a great player who will occasionally get out matched in critical jump ball and sideline out patterns.

1.13 El Paso Rockets
G [player]Ernie Hayes[/player]

El Paso was probably looking to take the best overall player at this spot as they have no position group solidified with players they are happy starting there. League scouts and other SEC coaches all seemed to have mixed feelings about Ernie's ability to excel in the CFL. Some say that he is a beast that is capable of putting up a Hall of Legends worthy career. Others told me, Hayes was playing above his talent on a pretty good team and offensive line at Florida and they knew he would be overmatched at tackle so they kept him inside. That Ernie is at his best when he is not asked to be the best on the line. Of course the Rockets hope they found an anchor on the inside of their line instead of an overhyped player from a good program. I think he can be a starter in this league, but doubt he will be a star.

1.14 Texas Sundevils
WR [player]Rusty Moore[/player]

The Sundevils have many holes on their roster and had 3 picks in this first round. Again, wide receivers of worth are a rare commodity in this league which makes them get drafted higher then maybe they should year after year. Rusty should be a decent receiver, but not someone you imagine as being the number 1 option through the air. They must have not liked any of the linebackers or safeties still on the board, that I think would have been a better pick here.

1.15 Charleston Monitors
LB [player]Herb Welborn[/player]

Herb put up great numbers at Cal and impressed a lot of scouts over his college career. However, his combine could have hurt him as you see a lot of GM's put too much emphasis on 40 times. He is a little undersized for a CFL linebacker, but makes up for it with heart. Welborn is great against the run, and is very good in pass coverage. Which is great, as pass rushing is not his strong suit and he should not be asked to do it since he is so valuable in coverage. Should be a very good linebacker if the Monitors cater to his strengths and will leave fans in Texas wondering what he could have done in a Sundevil's jersey.

Awesome work. I really enjoy the depth and background you put into these.

For my part, I do regret picking Rusty at 1.14. To be honest, he was 3rd in my queue behind Newsome and Hayes when I left to go out for the night and ... whoops. I was thinking I would end up taking him at 1.28. After camp, I'm hopeful he will be a contributor... certainly he is an upgrade, albeit an overpriced one.

Looking forward to the rest.

1.16 Baltimore Bombers
RB [player]Johnny Chiaverini[/player]

The 16th overall pick in the 2018 draft had to be spent on a RB because the RB Baltimore took with the 13th overall pick in the 2016 draft has sucked. And by sucked, I mean [player]Timothy Connell[/player] grabs the cock with both hands and gobbles. Timothy started all 32 games since being drafted. His rookie year he had a 3.57 YPC and a whole 5 rushing TD's, and in the 2017 season he had an amazing 2.85 YPC averaging less then 35 yards a game on the ground with 4 TD's. Johnny will be able to best those numbers easily. The only knock any scout has had on Chiaverini's game is his lack of vision to notice holes that open up where the play was not designed to go. He will be an immediate and substantial upgrade to the league's worst rushing attack.

1.17 Albany Crows
S [player]Alex Torres[/player]

Albany has a need at safety and at corner, but Alex will be a corner for the Crows. Albany upper management has made public note of their questioning of Alex's ability to play the run and state this as the reason to move him to corner. He has the physical skills and football knowledge to be a very solid corner in this league. It will be a change for him, and I am anxious to see how long it will take for him to get the hang of playing corner. He will be thrown into the fire early as he looks to open the season as a starter.

1.18 Cleveland Flats
CB [player]Ethan Solari[/player]

Ethan is an undersized and overrated corner out of BYU. The Flats needed to upgrade the corner postion and feel Solari does that. I think Solari will be an upgrade and should be a decent corner that does not excel at any one thing, but is better then average at everything. He should do well, but the Flats should not expect a superstar.

1.19 Fargo Frontier
S [player]Spencer Gaines[/player]

Spencer is a pretty good safety that has an above average all around game. As a Seminole, he had a knack for stuffing the running game. However, he will still be good at that at this level, but will not be the force in the CFL that he was in the ACC. Gaines might have been able to make the move corner, but seems to have a better chance of a better career as a safety and will start for the Frontier day one.

1.20 Long Beach Calibiri
T D.J. Scott

Long Beach hopes Scott can be the replacement for K.C. Davis who is getting near the end of his career. D.J. is not the brightest guy in the world and learning from an old pro is probably a good thing. Scott is a small tackle, but has very good feet and decent strength. He could start a few games at right tackle this season, but barring injury is not expected to see the field regularly his first season.

1.21 Detroit Vampires
T [player]Joe Andrew[/player]

Joe is an undersized tackle, but that appears to be his only weakness. Really good footwork and strong enough to do the job. I am unsure if Joe will start for the Vampires this season, but he should be a solid starter for them in the seasons to come. I really think Joe will have a very good career for Detroit.

1.22 Boise Stampede
LB R.J. Baron

R.J. looks to be exactly what you want in a linebacker, inside or out. However, at Ole Miss he was not able to perform and looked just average in every area of the game, pass coverage, pass rush, and stopping the run. I think he will stay on the outside in Boise's 3-4. R.J. is a very intelligent player on and off of the field. I think he will grow into a great player with the training he will get in the CFL. It would help if he had a veteran help him learn the ropes quicker, but the outside linebackers are all very young and will be learning together on the job.

1.23 Durham Bulldogs
DT [player]William Keith[/player]

Keith is a solid run stuffer DT, but that is about it. There was no franchise QB in this draft and Durham would have made a move to get up to get one. They will have to get one next year, if one is available. Keith does not feel like a good fit for this team and this spot. Linebacker is a much bigger need and plenty of quality ones where available right here.

1.24 Albany Crows
FB [player]Calvin Starks[/player]

The Crows have a solid FB in [player]Deon Boone[/player] and will move Calvin to the tight end spot. These moves are tricky, but I think Calvin can do it. However, I am not sure his ability at TE will be worth a 1st round pick here. Fullbacks making this transition tend to have trouble getting used to being as involved in the passing game. Calvin will start this year; but even with only 1 real receiver on the Crows, he should not be much of a factor as a pass catcher his rookie season.

1.25 Atlantic City Phantoms
CB [player]Bob Murray[/player]

Bob is useless against the run, but how often do you ask your corner to help in the running game? Corner back was the only glaring weakness on the Phantoms defense. This leads them to take Bob here a little higher then he should have gone. Bob was an excellent return man at Nebraska and should still be one in the CFL. Murray's speed helped him look like a better cover corner then he really was in college, and he will now be covering guys who he does not have a speed advantage over. He still should be about average as a corner and above average as a returner.

1.26 Hartford Attack
QB [player]Wes Harden[/player]

The first QB comes off the board at the 26th pick. I cannot remember the last time a QB was not drafted until after a fullback was picked. Wes was always tabbed as a "game manager" type of QB. He is amazing at having that sixth sense of when the pocket is closing in around him. Harden is very intelligent on the field and will throw the ball away, or away from the double teams and avoid mistakes. Hartford wanted to get a QB to be ready for when Oberg retires, which cannot be that far off. Wes threw very few picks in college, and went on 5, yes 5, different stretches of over 150 pass attempts without throwing a pick. Harden should do enough to start in this league and put his team in a position to win most games by using the people around him and never trying to do to much. Some QB's can go onto the field and be gunslingers and find a way to win that way, however Harden never be able to take a poor team on his shoulders and just win, but you know what you get day in, day out. I like this pick and this player.

1.27 Boston Red Devils
DE [player]Randy Plechaty[/player]

Randy is a run stopping defensive end that really seems like a middle linebacker playing end. Boston plays a 3-4 and Plechaty just does not seem to fit, and they need some linebackers. Not sure about this pick for this roster, as there were linebackers and offensive tackles that were still here, are more talented then Randy, and make more sense for this team.

1.28 Texas Sundevils
S [player]Carl Kennedy[/player]

Carl is an undersized safety who would be a major liability against the running game. Kennedy should be moved to corner where he will be a big improvement at that spot for Texas. But, Carl projects to me to be just an average starting corner in this league, at best slightly above average. Still bad against the run as a corner, and does not have the hands to hold on to potential interceptions.

1.29 Denver Dynomite
DT [player]Kerry Floyd[/player]

Kerry is coming to Denver to become the starting nose tackle. It was a big hole in Denver. Floyd will not be a force to be reckoned with, but he will not be a weakness to worry about either. Should do well for this team, but that will not show up on the stat sheet. Kerry will do what is asked of him, keep guys busy, and let the playmakers around and behind him make plays.

1.30 Anchorage Wolfpack
RB [player]Donnie McGee[/player]

Donnie is a small RB that just seems to do everything well. Nothing he really excels at and nothing is a glaring weakness. McGee has some big shoes to fill as [player]Colin Gaylor[/player] led the league in yards per carry for starting RB's last season with 5.61 and no one else was above 5. Rumors are that the Wolfpack front office was concerned about Colin's injury history, work ethic, and contract demands. Colin is entering his last year on this contract and after putting up very solid numbers last year could have held out and demanded a fat multi-year contract. Anchorage is a fairly solid team, and Donnie should step in for Colin and do well.

1.31 New Orleans Raging Horde
LB [player]Justin Craig[/player]

Justin is a very intelligent player as well as very athletic. The Horde have a pretty weak linebacker corps and Justin steps in and immediately improves things there. He will be the best and smartest linebacker they have in New Orleans. The Raging Horde use a 4-3 defense, and in a 4-3 you want your best and brightest to man that middle linebacker spot. Justin is not the size you want from a linebacker, much less at mike, but I feel his smarts and speed would make him an elite MLB. Craig will be starting for the Raging Horde from week 1, the only question is outside or inside, and you already know where I stand on that one.

1.32 Texas Sundevils
RB [player]Jake Yates[/player]

Texas is making their 3rd pick in this first round here at the end of it. For Texas, running back was not a glaring area of need as their starter last season ran for 1,000 yards at a clip of 4.21 YPC. T.J. Ibarra has done a solid job behind a suspect line for the Sundevils. Jake is a good player, but has many holes to his game, and overall just does not seem to me like he will make much of a difference over T.J. The Sundevils still have a big need at outside linebacker, and there are a few highly talented ones still available at this spot. Texas will say that they got a starter with this pick, but I don't like the pick because it will displace a starter that was not underperforming. It should have been a player that would be a starter at a position of greater need.

That is it for the first round, no second round this year, now onto team grades by division.
