Here is a quick look at the salary cap situation for the CFL next year as of today. Cuts could be made before the end of the season that would change things. Additionally, I write this assuming that every team entering the offseason over $100 million will be over the cap.

[b293afa6]The $100 million dollar club:[/b293afa6]
Chicago 1-8 - $101 million
Denver 5-4 - $102 million
Hartford 8-1 - $102 million
Shreveport 4-5 - $103 million
Tucson 5-4 - $116 million
Anchorage 6-3 - $117 million
Santa Cruz 6-3 - $120 million
Charleston 6-3 - $122 million
El Paso 3-5-1 - $130 million

The teams just over the $100m mark should be able to make a few moves and get under the cap. Even so, it's amazing that Chicago has so much future cap space tied up in a 1 win team. The rest of these teams can at least still entertain the hope of a playoff spot (some with much better chances than others), but the biggest spenders could be in trouble next season. Apparently Jeebs spends cap money the way he posts - too much.

[b293afa6]The cheap skate club:[/b293afa6]
Arizona 2-7 - $79.2 million
New Orleans 7-2 - $78.8 million
Fargo 1-8 - $76.8 million
Boise 2-7 - $74.2 million
Memphis 4-5 - $69.05 million
Huntington Beach 3-6 - $58.5 million

Huntington Beach will probably be able to field some very favorable trade offers from some of the $100m club teams looking to shed big salaries in the upcoming offseason, in addition to being able to sign whoever they want.
New Orleans QB Randolph Kranz's contract is running out at the end of the year, and it'll be interesting to see if they try to bring him back for one more year. Next year will be his 14th.

I love seeing the look on my cap manager's face when I hand players huge bonuses. It's usually something like:

I worked really hard last off-season to get off that list. It looks like some folks are going to have to do the same this off-season.

I will be in the $100 million club once I get Rounds signed for next year.

I had to make cuts and trades like crazy to get under the cap. I would have been one of the slightly-over-the-cap teams except that a highly paid player retired so I took a cap hit on the rest of his bonus money this year. It basically resulted in something like $10-15m in dead cap space and made it completely impossible for me to keep several star players and stay under the cap. This is something else for the $100 million club teams to keep in mind.
