Sunday Morning Quarterback – Weeks 6 & 7

GRIDIRON GRETA LIST OF THE WEEK (This week – Top Pass Catching Tight Ends)

5- Preston Sims - CHI
94 third down catching and 78 route running. Sims was a second round pick in 2027 who was Chicago’s franchise player in 2030.

4- Sammie Schrimper - SCU
90 getting downfield and 76 third down catching. Second round pick in 2025 that has blossomed into one of the best tight ends in the CFL.

3- Victor Cole - ARI
93 getting downfield and 84 route running. First team all-league tight end in 2027 and 2028.

2- Tony Abercrombie - ELP
84 avoid drops and 94 getting downfield. Abercrombie was 2nd team all-league in 2029.

1- Bennie Matson - OMA
93 avoid drops and 93 third down catching. Was the 14th pick in 2025 draft who should finally receive some postseason recognition in 2030 thanks to an 85.7% completion percentage

FINE FIVE:

1- Omaha (6-0)
#1 run defense and #5 pass defense.

2- Tucson (6-0)
One of only two teams to average over 300 passing yards per game.

3- New Orleans (6-1)
Second in the league with 65 points allowed.

4- Anchorage (5-1)
DT Desmond Macri leads the CFL with 7 sacks.

5- El Paso (5-2)
Second in the league with 41 points allowed.

Football Outsiders Adjusted Line Yards:

One of the oldest theories in football is that you need to have a strong offensive line in order to be successful. The adjusted line yards report attempts to measure the impact of blocking while filtering out long gains. This year, we are going to track this report and see if it really does have merit. Percentages are amount over/under the league average.

Top Five

1- Tulsa Talons (1-5) +19%
2- Huntington Beach Wolfpack (4-2) +17%
3- Durham Bulldogs (2-5) +15%
4- Boston Bees (3-3 ) +12%
5- Tennessee Militia (3-3) +11%

Bottom Five

28- Oregon Ice (2-5) -7%
29- Brooklyn Brawlers (4-3) -11%
30- Hartford Attack (2-4) -27%
31- Albany Crows (4-3) -28%
32- Cleveland Flats (3-4) -28%

MVP WATCH:

QB Marco Bennett – Omaha - 1,420 yards passing, 11/1 TD/INT, 116.8 QB rating
QB Eugene Paulk – Tucson – 1,808 yards passing, 19/7 TD/INT, 110.3 QB rating
RB Phillip McGough – Cleveland – 840 yards rushing, 5.96 yards per carry, 2 rushing touchdowns
WR John Yancy – Fargo – 45 receptions, 833 yards, 4 touchdowns

TEN THINGS I THINK I THINK:

1- Omaha continues to impress. They have allowed an incredible 38 points total in the first six games. That defense better be good after QB Marco Bennett suffered a stress fracture in his league during week 7 action. He is out 8 weeks.

2- Only 13 teams in the CFL have a winning record after seven weeks.

3- Chicago SE Rondell Schwartz had a devastating knee injury that many are saying could be career ending (early signs point at a recovery period of 52 weeks. It is reported that Schwartz flew to Germany to receive treatment at the notorious East Berlin Sports Institute.

4- How about those Atlantic City Phantoms. At 2-4, they have won as many games as they did all of 2029. ACI still needs a quarterback (the team is last in passing), but a strong defense has kept them in almost every game.

5- Santa Cruz kick returner Warren Maloney leads the league with 2 returns for touchdowns. He is also averaging 27 yards per return.

6- How important are high draft picks? Omaha (the top team in the CFL) has a league high 15 1st round picks on their roster. Seattle, arguably the worst team in the CFL, has a league low of 5 first round picks on the team.

7- Baltimore, at 5-2, is one of the best teams in the league. However, they play in the same division as Omaha so they are the early favorite for a wild card spot. And their secret weapon: kicker John Oates. Oates is 11/13 from 40+ yards and an incredible 9/10 from 50+. No other kicker in league has more than 4 field goals from 50+.

8- As we dig deep into the statistical numbers, you find some interesting items. Albany is averaging an incredible 10.71 yards per carry when they run to the right side.

9- Albany sits at 4-3 and at the top of their division. The Crows are looking for their first winning season since 2022 and just might be a team to be looking out for in the years to come. Why? They are the youngest team in the CFL with an average age of 25.9.

10- Is the career of Long Beach QB Derrick Banner finally at an end? After 18 years and 61,878 yards (only 651 yards short of the CFL career passing record), Banner has been relegated to the bench with the emergence of Michael Vanderjagt.

Timmy, if you'd like I can edit your punter's name to something that might partner well with your kicker's name. If only I could think of the right name...we'd need something that would reflect the maneating nature of your special teams play, but that would still let everyone know that they were family men. Something that would make you look at a ball they've just kicked and think "she's gone," while still recognizing the one on one nature of the game. A name that would make all the rich girls blush, all the Saras smile, and provoke endless winks from their private eyes. Hmm...

Well, I got nothin'. If you think of something, let me know. Oh and timmy, as always your kiss is fairly high on my list.

No one can think of a nickname for this kicker? Say it isn't so. I can't go for that outcome. I guess I must be out of touch with the culture in the CFL.
