The first thing we have to report is the Breakers are under new management, GM John Solley vows to have this team in contention in no time. He was recently quoted as saying " I am very pleased with our free agency period, and our first draft pick. This league appears strong but I feel we are a deep and talented team already and still have one roster slot to fill in free agency, as well as 6 more draft picks, so we should be MORE than prepared to challenge for a playoff slot" Strong words, but are they foolhardy? Only time will tell.
This team just recently resigned one key backup from a year ago and that was highly touted LG Christobal Farias. This was far from an easy negotiation, heated words were exchanged from both ends. Christobal apperantly was upset about what he percieved an insult at the Breakers first few one year contract attempts, while each one paid more and more money for a one year deal, he felt as if he deserved a career contract. Things got so heated that Farias even ignored the first multi year contract the Breakers offered, but took the second and now the Breakers will return one of the best (as far as starting 5 goes) offensive lines in the league, besides being strong, it is also relatively young, sporting an average league experience of 3.4 seasons. Not bad.
The other really strong position is linebacker. The Breakers seem to improved on what was already a strength adding one of the most talented free agents in one Charles Crowder. He was signed to a huge one year deal at 7.5 million dollars. He simply does it all, a jack of all trades, master of none type of lb, although he is probably best at rushing the passer and special teams. It remains to see if he is a one year option or they can resign him long term.
The Breakers also added to the lb depth in the draft when they selected what most experts feel was the top Linebacker prospect in one Lewis Floyd. GM Solley was recently quoted as saying the following "Mr. Floyd was followed by our organization since high school. The man is simply a ball hawk. When I got here, the staff showed me a ton of film on this kid and his ONLY weakness is his lack of experience on a pro level, but every rookie has that weakness and possibly man to man defense, but with our linebacker depth, he won't be depended on to start day 1, although make no mistake, he will be given every opportunity to earn it. We paid alot to trade up in the draft to nab, Lewis but we are happy to report, we got the man we wanted. "
A few question marks remain with the roster slots winding down. This team looks shaky at rb, defensive line and in the defensive backfield. Will they strengthen these weak spots in the draft, free agency or via trade? Stay tuned.
Until next time, you've been just hit with The Wave.
