Love starting off vs MIA who should be our rival for the division this season.

Their OL isn't what it used to be and the WRs even with the addition of longtime Sodbuster Fence aren't too scary but man at least in the PS they were airing it out. We did add some pieces this offseason to hopefully be able to deploy Cover3/4 Ds and well here is our chance.

On O we just hope that our young QB can go from a 65 QBR average to something around 80 and things should be gravy. We are running far more formations and will try to be splitting targets out over the course of the season but this week cold be tough sledding against those very good boundary corners and SS Kahn patrolling any YAC over the middle for MIA and they added a pass rush piece so 3rd down might be problematic as well.

A poor kickoff from MIA and 5 nice plays from su have us in FG range but then we take back2back sacks and end up shanking a makable FG. MIA moves it some but a penalty on 2nd down helps us hold them to a failed scramble on 3rd and their K knocks through a 50 yarder. We start well once more but get tackled short of the sticks on 3rd and 3 and boom it into the endzone. WR Flynn hauls in a deep shot over double coverage off of PA for MIA and Rb Prescott adds another YAC chunk but they try us deep once more and rookie NB Horton hauls in the pick in the end zone.

We grind and TE our way to FG range but another failed complete on 3rd down means we settle for the tying FG. We top TE Kimsey one yard shy on 3rd and 9 for a 3andO but a penalty and huge sack sets up 2nd and 29 ad their rush is too good for very long 3rd downs. MIA takes their own penalty sack combo and the rookei WR Agnostis gets a nice reverse gain but wily LB Hampton steps in front on the 3r ddown TE Kimsey target. We are moving the chains outside of 2M but have a conversion called back on a hold and promptly throw a pick. MIA battels their way in the hurry up to our 16 with 21 seconds left and manages two more short completions before kicking the FG to go up 3 into the half.

PRetty even, when not getting sacked we are completing passes but very little YAC while they have thrown the 2 picks. Both team sare running the ball well but not as often as pmaybe they should especially in our case. Liekly will coem down to whichever teams athletes can generate those big plays or take over on teh ground.

MIA starts off with 2 10 yard runs but peeters out at midfield. We go 3andO tryign 3 straight pussy ball passes to the weak side. We stuff a run on 1st and get the hurry on 3rd and short but are offsdies on the punt so they get another shot at it anda personal foul puts them in the orange zone but they can't connect downfield from there and instead pin us at our 1 yard line and while we get it off oru line and complete 2 passes we keep getting very few yards on our routes and MIA takes over at our 48. Hughes immediately looks deep but once more throws a pick into our Cover 4 shell on a tipped pass and we take over buried inside our 5 once more and this time CB Gaylor shoot sthe gap and takes us down for a safety. A 79!!! yard safety punt prevents godo field position for MIA and they finally convert a tough 3rd and 10 to the rookei WR Agnost but we stop the 3rd and 2 in the orange zone with a batted pass and then stuff them on 4th and 2 to regain possession as we close out the 3rd.

We also can't convert on 3rd and 2 (drawing a familiar) so MIA starts at tehir own 5 and after getting stuffed twice punts from there and we take over at their 44 down 5 points. We fail on yet another 3rd and 2 (on what looks liek an improvised throw downfield instead of the backside slant) and then promptly throw a pick on our own 4th down attempt. WR Fence get sbit of revenge with a nice YAC chunk for MIA but they opt to run on 3rd and 5 and are snuffed out. After a big TFL we convert a 3rd and 15 to keep moving and then try to go empty and are lucky to recover a strip sack adn try 2 more downfield throws to no avail. A hodling call brings bcack a big PR for MIA so they start at tehir 8 up 5 with 5 minutes left. They grind ouut that first key conversion but then take a sack adn we grab another pick so get to take over at tehir 40 jsut outside of 2 minutes. We will see if the rook can lead a short hurry up drive for the win. A scramble gets us to their 28 at the break and the newcomer burner WR hauls in a deep shot to set us up at tehir 4 with plenty of time left. Drop, hurry, tackled for 1 yard gain and the game esentialyl ends on a batted pass. But no, there was illegal contact so we get a fresh set at tehir 2 yard line: hurry, defensed, defensed, sack. And that really is ballgame.

Well jeez can't say that was a fun watch. OUr D gets 4 INTs and we have 8 downs inside the 5 to get it in the endzone but can't pull it off...apaprently the plays that worked last year aren't any good anymore for those situations.

Nice battle bbriders, maybe someone will score a TD in our next matchup.

Box score analysis says our passing game is still terrible. Under 1 ANY/A if we ding ourselves for INTs. Defense is still great though as they woudl have been at 2 and we also did pretty good against the run. QBR concurs with Hughes edging out Johnstone with a 38.8 vs a 38.1.

Pass pro was our biggest problem with a 30% PR for MIA including 5 sacks though tehir secondary was also at around 20% defensed/intercepted. And we managed a meager 6 YAC on 18 completions in what was supposed to be a YAC driven offense this year.

Our own pass D was just under 30% rush as well and secondary at 15% with 2 YAC/catch allowed.

Unsurprisingly the teams combined for a 6/31 on 3rd and 4th downs.

Perhaps will jsut redo the O GP from scratch it would seem.

Week 1 shenanigans in full effect.

We manage more than 3 points on a drive and do so more than once.

We pitch a shutout until our punt return unit gives up a 95-yard score with 90 seconds left in the game. The defense is upset and stifles the 2-point conversion.

More success in one game on offense than we expected to see all season. I've fastened the seatbelt a little tighter as this is going to be one wild ride this season.

I like starting off the season with a win, especially against Fargo. Not the game I would have predicted but feel lucky we came away with a win in an ugly game. Both QBs with a 38 rating. Hughes did a decent job with completion percentage, but the 4 picks! Both DLs did a good job with pressuring the QB. Happy with our DEs picking up 4 sacks with the new guy, Luker, picking up his first sack as a Talon.

I too am going to probably just redo the O GP from scratch. Next up we have Omaha.
