The first pick is in the books, and Vegas got their guy. I don't think anybody was surprised that they went with Hutchinson.

Based on what Fastcat has said, I fully expect Santa Cruz to grab the WR at #2, though one of the DEs could work as well.

I'm a lot less sure about what to expect from Tulsa, so that is where things start to get interesting, I think. My gut said Tackle for the mock draft, but we'll see.

Anybody have any [b4379e17]bold[/b4379e17] predictions?

My bold prediction is the WR will go # 2, and Tulsa will entertain offers to move down a few spots for anyone who wants to jump up and grab a DE.

edit: then if no one makes a nice offer to move up, I'll be stuck having to choose what position to build the team around.

Very interesting indeed. Just based on the way the talent lies in the class, I think it was a pretty smart move for Tampa to consolidate some of those picks and move up. At the same time, Santa Cruz definitely got good value for the pick.

This move was a no brainer for me, I should get some help with the 1.10 pick, and 2 highly pd WR's would wreck havoc on a cap that already will be taxed in the next few years.

And with the 2nd pick in the 2014 draft the Tampa Bay Torpedoes select WR Raymond Lyon...

The more I looked at the class the more that Lyon not only looked like a super start talent, but a position that continues to be hard to fill in this league. I have a young QB coming in as a first time starter with Urruttia retiring and I lost Cleveland Coon to retirement so I had a huge hole at WR.

Part of why I stacked up on 1sts this year was a hope that if there was a guy at one of a few positions (WR and RB basically) at the top of this draft that I'd have the ammo to go and get him.

I had the ammo and the trade partner willing to make the deal.

I still have quite a few holes, namely on the defensive side of the ball, but this should make [player]Corwin Ellard[/player]'s first season as starter much less painful.

Lyon's going to be a stud in this league.

Great pickup Wade!

Instead of Lyon getting picked, Lyon got picked. Hmmmm, I'd say that was about as interesting as it would've been before the trade.

I think Tulsa has the first opportunity to throw a wrench in the works as the need of the team who ends up with that pick will impact the rest of the top 10.

Yeah, it really didn't change anything as far as how the picks will fall so much as it changed who got the player..

At first I thought you might have been trying to get ahead of me, to get the # 2 DE on the board.

Well as I suspected I received no interest in the pick, and it had been on the trade block for a few days before tonight, so I went ahead and made my pick to hopefully keep things moving along.

I went with the player I felt was the safest pick. My scout liked Pike a little better, and I'm hoping he helps give me the outside pass rush I haven't had. I've spent so many first round picks on the D-Line, I think this might finally be the one that solidifies it as one of the better lines in the league.

Just to show my drafting history on the D-Line
2004, 2.2 (Almost a first rounder...) [player]Vince George[/player]
2006, 1.18 [player]Jessie Sherman[/player]
2007, 1.11 [player]Donnell Hardy[/player]
2008, 1.8 [player]Norman Rodgers[/player]
2009, 1.24 [player]Seth Patton[/player]
2012, 1.11 [player]Drew Hutchins[/player]
2012, 2.11 [player]Wayne Marshall[/player]
And now...
2014, 1.3 DE Mitch Pike

edit:
I wanted to add- it was so close between the two DE's that a few normally smaller factors were the deciding ones for me. % Developed was slightly higher (experience also slightly better), Pike has an affinity with a leader, loyalty is very high, and he grew up in Louisiana :P

thought about taking the LB..he is very nice looking but needed the DE as well...He should be a star.

Same here- really wanted to move down a little and snag the LB, but went with the DE since it is more of an immediate need.

And that's why I wouldn't have traded 3 1st's to move up and grab a DE... I think it's very much up for debate how you rank the 3 or 4 (or more maybe even) DE's after the #1 - so I don't see the sense in trading up to get one specifically.. it's why the guys from 3-6 or so aren't getting any bites on their trade block I think.

+1

FWIW, my scout and I liked Hartman the best after Hutchinson. However, you really can't miss with any of the DE's. Hindsight will tell us everything though, it always does.

I don't have game access now, but I think my #2 DE won't even go in the top 15, so yeah.. it's a deeeep class for DE's..

That being said, Hutchison was head and shoulders above that even.

The only reason for someone to trade up was to grab something else than a De, eg Wade with his receiver or the stud ILB.

Exactly. Tough year to hold a top 5-10 pick if you don't want a DE.

I have a bigger need in other areas but there are still some stud DEs left. I might just nab one.

Someone wake the new kid up and tell him he's on the clock.

Sorry for the impatience, I'm going to be gone from this Friday through the 15th with no computer access. Off to SD with the family for camping! So I'm just wanting to be around for my 1st rounder if it's possible.

Seconded. I start getting kind of twitchy this close to my pick.
