As the Boxcars front office tells it, they had one target for their second round pick. The target they spoke of is Oregon State runningback Sedrick Prior, who they took with the 44th pick overall pick in the draft.

Prior is considered a bit of a reach, however, as some scouts believed he lacked the speed to be a feature back after his 4.74 40 time at the combine, and he isn't strong enough to be a short yardage back. He won't be filling any of those roles in Fargo, as coaches are currently slotting him to be their runningback on passing downs.

"He's not going to be able to do everything," offensive coordinater Heath McDaniel replied to questions of Prior's ability to play runningback in the CFL, "but we're not going to be asking him to do everything. He was a great reciever out of the backfield and lined up in the slot for the (Oregon State quarterback) Darnell Rivers last year. We lost Joseph Beavers, who is one of the best at catching the ball out of the backfield, so we needed someone to fill that role. We don't have a guy like him this year, so we need to divide up the runningback position."

With the 10th pick in round 3, a pick they got from Long Beach in the Beavers trade, they opted go with Walter Mattes, a quarterback out of Louisiana Monroe. The pick surprised many, but it seems to indicate the team is not happy with the progress of Wendell McIver, who was at one point thought of as the teams future backup QB. "Mattes has incredible accuracy, and he should one day be a great backup," McDaniel said of the young passer. "We don't know if he'll be able to start one day, but we believe that down the road he'll be a great guy to turn to if Bridges goes down."

Two picks later, Fargo went with another back in 6'2" 275 pound fullback Brett Offutt out of Oregon. Offutt played both tight end and fullback for the Ducks, but the Boxcars may look to take advantage of his size in short yardage situations. "He'll be great to have around the goalline," coach Korey Tyworth responded when asked how he planned to use Offutt. "He's great to run behind, and he was fantastic at punching the ball into the endzone in college. I think he could be the guy who completes what we're putting together on offense this year."
