Game Report: Texas 13, Atlantic City 3
Exhibition Week 1
PLAYER OF THE GAME
CB Dennis Porter
Porter showed why he was franchised in the offseason as he intercepted three passes.
MISSING IN ACTION
RB Mario Hall
The Phantoms are going to rely heavily in the 2nd year running back and the first preseason game was not a good one (8 car., 24 yards). It is still VERY early but if Atlantic City is going to improve at all they need a big season from Hall.
TURNING POINT
Early and the 2nd quarter, Atlantic City was unable to score from the Texas 3 yard line. The field goal attempt was blocked due to a bad snap. Points for the Phantoms are going to be precious this year and they can’t make these type of mistakes.
If YOU MISSED IT
• The ACI defense, which was tweaked both in personnel and play calling, held Texas to 177 total yards (and only 40 passing). Texas also never reached the ACI red zone. You can’t expect this type of play every week, and this is preseason, but it is a good sign.
• First round draft pick Edwin Stoner has signed his contract and will make his debut in exhibition game two.
• Rookie punter Howard Doyle, locked in a tight battle with fellow rookie Larry Keith, had a great day. His stats: 46.5 yard avg., 37.3 yard net, long of 60 with 3 kicks inside the 20. This week it is Keith’s turn.
• Stoner is ready to play, but one of the big offseason signings is hurt. OLB J.C. Morrison dislocated his shoulder and is out 7 weeks. It looks like we will have to wait until week 4 or so to see how the reworked linebacking group works out.
