Sunday Morning Quarterback – Weeks 4 & 5

QUICK HITS FROM AROUND THE LEAGUE:
- In case anyone wondered what was the key to winning, check out the two of the three remaining undefeated teams: Anchorage and Omaha
o Anchorage – Def - #3 run, #3 pass, Off - #20 run, #23 pass
o Omaha – Def - #1 run, #6 pass, Off - #4 run, #17 run

- San Antonio gave up 24 points and 2 red zone visits to Tennessee in a week 1 loss. Over the next three games, they gave up only 1 red zone visit and allowed a total of 17 points. The next two best teams in red zone defense have twice as many visits (6).

GRIDIRON GRETA LIST OF THE WEEK (This week – top run defenders)
5- Joel Holley - TEN
84/84 with 92 run defense. Second team all-league defensive tackle in 2029.

4- George McCarroll - FAR
83/83 with 94 run defense. Top overall pick in the 2023 draft has been well worth that selection.

3- Dusty Heninger - CHI
64/64 with 97 run defense. Heninger, in only his 3rd year, has become a force the Chicago.

2- Warren Prescott - ANC
91/91 with 90 run defense. Three time 1st team all-league defensive tackle is still dominant in his 8th year.

1- Tracy “The Siege” Mosby
95/95 with 100 run defense. Five year veteran was second team all-league in 2029. Should be first team in 2030 and many years to come.

Fine Five:
1- Omaha (5-0)
League best 32 points allowed. Also tied for league lead with a +8 turnover ratio.

2- Anchorage (5-0)
Anchors might clinch their division by week 8.

3- Tucson (4-0)
QB Eugene Paulk is the league leader with 15 touchdown passes.

4- New Orleans (4-1)
DT Desmond Macri leads the CFL with 7 sacks.

5- San Antonio (3-1).
Second in the league with 41 points allowed.

Football Outsiders Adjusted Line Yards:
One of the oldest theories in football is that you need to have a strong offensive line in order to be successful. The adjusted line yards report attempts to measure the impact of blocking while filtering out long gains. This year, we are going to track this report and see if it really does have merit. Percentages are amount over/under the league average.

Top Five

1- Tulsa Talons (1-4) +21%
2- Huntington Beach Wolfpack (3-1) +18%
3- Durham Bulldogs (1-4) +17%
4- Atlantic City Phantoms (1-3) +16%
5- Tennessee Militia (2-3) +12%

Bottom Five

28- Brooklyn Brawlers (3-2) -10%
29- Hartford Attack (2-2) -19%
30- Oregon Ice (0-5) -27%
31- Cleveland Flats (3-2) -32%
32- Albany Crows (3-2) -34%

MVP WATCH:
Coming soon

TEN THINGS I THINK I THINK:
1- Albany needs to keep pounding the ball with RB Johnny Hong. He is averaging 7.38 yards per carry to lead the league. His four 100+ yard games are also tied for the league lead.
2- Baltimore is living up to their nickname as the Bombers. They have scored 171 points, almost 30 points more than the next highest scoring team.
3- Detroit QB Shane Hall was lost for the year with a knee injury. Mo Jurevicius, who has been disgruntled as the backup, will get his chance to show that he should have been the starter from week 1 for the Vampires.
4- The Oregon Ice continues to be in a deep freeze. At 0-5 with a league low 46 points scored, they may be on their way to top draft pick.
5- And speaking of Oregon, you have to feel bad for QB Rico Lynn. Lynn, A former 1st round pick in 2024, has had five seasons with 20 or more touchdown passes. This year, he had only 2 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. And much of the blame can go to the Oregon offensive line, which has played a key role in Lynn being sacked a league high 19 teams as well as being knocked down 23 times. With a history of injury issues, how long can Lynn last?
6- CB Stan Casillas of Las Vegas has returned 3 interceptions for touchdowns this year. In total, he has 5 interceptions.
7- Seattle QB Kurt Huffman has had a tough time holding onto the ball this year. He leads the league with 7 fumbles. He had 11 all of 2029.
8- If you are looking for a player who is playing above expectations, Detroit WR Scott Marshall may be your guy. A late third round pick in 2027, Marshall is sixth in the CFL with 29 receptions.
9- There have been a total of four kickoff returns for touchdowns in 2030. Anchorage has two of these and they were by different players – Ray Bradley and Phil Swift.
10- Long Beach DE Jesse Watson has been a pass rushing demon this year. Watson has 5 sacks, 16 hurries, and 12 QB knockdowns.

Indeed. Great stuff!

And yeah, too bad about Shane Hall and Rico Lynn. At least the latter has a chance to turn things around. The former is probably done for his career (but what a career it was!).
