After two consecutive sub-par seasons, the Shreveport Pride's GM - Raven Hawk - did the only thing he could think of: pass the buck. The buck was passed to Coach Nolan Walsh as Walsh was sent packing by the Pride. This is surprising news after Walsh signed a 3-year, $5 Million extension just last year.
The Pride had obviously planning the move for weeks, since shortly after the announcement regarding Walsh, the Pride announced his replacement. Alvin Peterson will take over the reigns of the Pride. Peterson expects to keep Ogden and Cassidy on in the Coordinator positions and MacBeth will remain as the Pride's lead scout.
The Pride's GM, Raven Hawk, had this to say about the moves: "At the end of the day the buck stops with me. If I don't put together a good team, then my job is in jeopardy. Coach Nolan is a good man, but we had to go our separate ways. He understood what we are doing and that his record has been far from stellar over the last three seasons. We needed to make a change."
Alvin Peterson has spent one season as a head coach in the CFL prior to joining the Pride. Peterson coached the New Orleans Breakers to a 6-10 record two seasons ago. The Pride feels that the young (39 year old) Peterson has the potential to be a great coach. Peterson's coaching style seems to lean towards motivator rather than disciplinarian, but don't be fooled, Peterson says that he can bring the hammer down when needed.
"Different players react to different motivators. Some are motivated by the money, some are motivated by the love of the game. Some players need a swift kick in the butt. Everybody's different. I try to respect the players' diversity, while maintaining a cohesive team environment."
The good news for Peterson is that two monster offensive lineman have decided to stay around and give him a chance. Thirteen year veterans Daniel Braddy and Rodrick Clarke opted not to retire to give their new coach a chance. Braddy is completing the final year of his contract and Clarke returns as the team's franchise designation.
