Hosting Alaska and back in the dance after 3 years of rebuild. Jimmy M has been long enough that he actually bounced us in the Divisional round in 2050.We obviously took our time GPing this one but can't say we are doing anything too bold.

Alaska has run the same O GP the whole season but it isn't the disadvantage for them as with most as each formation grouping still is pretty diverse. One decision we made was to use Spy a lot as a couple key scrambles could turn this game for themand in a very limited sampel size Spy seems to be a good element to many Ds I looked at.

I also scouted their D in depth and pretty much just noticed that they don't ever put 3 deep and in general are pretty aggressive. Their secondary is solid throughout and I couldn't find any matchups to exploit other than over the middle but our perimeter passing game isn't build for that and our TE is dinged up. While the bars say I should be able to run roughshod over them we have put up some stinkers in 4 out of our past 5 games on the ground andthis one will likely come down to TOs and situational football as is typical with good teams of course.

We couldn't do much to open things and they hit TE Blaine over the middle and he coughed it up but Alaska recovered only to have us pick them on a deep pass on the next play. A nice run and a downfield grab by Crabtree have us in the RZ and we grind out a 1st recovering a fumble as well before Woodard beats the Man blitz package and we go up 7. Alaska converts 3rd and 1 twice on the ground and another conversion gets them to the RZ, and a 4th 3rd down conversion ties it up.

Crabtree gets a nice 30 yard catch and run against the blitz but we go cloud of dust, cloud of dust and hurry and opt to punt with a 4th and 6 from their 39. Alaska converts yet another 3rd and 4-5 and are now 5/5 and we need to get them into 3rd and long it woudl seem. A penalty gives them the 3rd and 10 but Jimmy M still converts to Blaine who adds another grab en route to our 22 and he is also 5/5 now. We finally knock down a 3rd and 5 pass and Alaska goes up by 3. B2B penalties force us into a 2nd and 23 but we hti Spradling for 53 on the 3rd and forever and Crabtree gets his 2nd TD from 20 yards out to have us back up 4. JimmyM converts another 3rd and medium and they cross midfield with over a minute left in the half. THey go conservative but Jimmy scrambles against our Prevent and they hit Coe on 3rd down deep but time expires before they can get the FG off.

We need to be more consistent on the ground and not be so dpeendent on big plays on O and get some stops on D with Alaska at 9/10 on 3rd down. or else this one could get ugly.

2 20 yards gains gets them to midfield after starting deep and Jimmy M hits 3 consecutive intermediate passes to set up a 1st from our 3 but we tighten up and hang onto a 1point advantage. RB Fulton loses another fumble and we are fortunate to recover at midfield and we are pushed back but convert another 3rd and forever to get into FG range. A failed completion on 3rd and medium sets up a 4th and 1 at their 7 and we play it safe putting our advantage back at 4 points. We get our first 3andO on D of the game but a 63 net yard punt switches the field for Alaska. We are going to the air now with 5 consecutive passes and now have a whopping 17 dropbacks nearing the end of the 3rd quarter.

We face a 3rd and 1 at their 19 and throw it but are tackled behind the LOS (aaargh that is why I hate throwing on 3rd and short) and settle for a 7 point lead. We get another 3andO as their finesse run game isn't fooling us as much now. A bad punt and godo return is negated by a penalty on the return and we go 3andO ourselves as Alsaska is really tackling well against our running game. We get a 3rd 3andO on D and knock Jimmy M from the game and a PR TD by a guy not even designated as our PR has us looking pretty up 14 with 8 minutes left and Jimmy M on the sidelines. Alaska backup QB can't move it and we grind out just 1 st and miss a long FG but the clock is still under 4 minutes. Alaska battles downfield and gets within our 10 but can't get int he endzone and that is ballgame.

Good game Alaska, we had no answer for you in the 1st half and some tough breaks led to you not having a lead there I think. You got cheated out of a couple comeback drives for sure. We only dropped bakc 18 times and weren't particulary efficient (2/8 on 3rd) but our receivers generated more than 8 YAC / catch against those blitzes. Our running game was pretty meh again and our usually successful 3rd down runs were useless. I am now a firm believer in seasonal wear and tear and perhaps having both Ts tired for the last quarter of the season has impacted it as well.

Glad to see Jimmy M isn't too banged up as well. Onto just our 2nd Conference Championship game despite being in the playoffs 7 times now in the Ushikawa era.

Good game, Smitty. It looks like the week off helped our offense get some rest. It was good to see the Pride put up a 30 pt game against an excellent defense.
