Santa Cruz Privateers GM Fastcat announced today, that long time Head Coach Ken Wickes contract was not renewed because of failing health. Wickes coach of the Privateers since 2013 had a 212-201-2 record for the Privateers and a 288-230-4 career record while serving the Memphis and Tucson franchises from 2005-2012. "Ken Wickes, is an outstanding coach, he led us to the 2032 CFL Championship and brought 9 Division championships to Santa Cruz. We felt we had to make the move, with Ken being 73 years old, and in promoting Artie Weinke from his Offensive Coordinator position to Head Coach, kept us from losing a key member of the Privateer family."
A Coordinator for 16 years, Weinke is thought of as one of the best offensive minds in football, his promotion was expedited by the fact the franchise thought they would lose him as Coordinator this year, and Wickes age/health. Weinke a one time backup QB for Tucson, Texas, Tulsa, and Omaha had a career 2-6 record, but is an offensive mind, and key developer of former Privateer QB Quentin Larrabee and current QB Blaine Barrett.
The promotion of Weinke leaves a big hole at Offensive Coordinator and the Privateers are now in a bidding war for 49 year old unproven Harris Russell.
