While things are still fresh in people's minds, I think this is a good time to throw some ideas on the table on how to improve the draft in future seasons. I'm sure we all agree we can do much better than what we did this year!!!

I'll start things off by submitting some ideas that have already been discussed here or just ripped off from other leagues ( :) ):

- use a drafting utility
- have a hard clock (exact time TBD)
- email the next owner after you've down your own pick
- have a stickied thread in the forum with owners unavailable times
- send a list of picks to the commish if you know you're not gonna be available

I think using a drafting utility would be the best option. In fact, I decided that I'm going to write one because I think it will greatly improve the draft for everyone. If everyone agrees to use my drafting utility then all we need to discuss is the rules: time limit, unavailable times, etc. Perhaps we can steal the IHOF's rules since their draft seemed to run very smoothly. How does this sound?

I think a draft utility's a great idea! I also like the idea of a live draft, with owners submitting lists if needed. But failing in that, a draft utility would be my second choice, and I'll help with any info I can. :)

that sounds very good to me, i dont know the IHOF's rules, but we can look at them- and tweak them a little if we need.

That is excellent news!!!

Are you aware that VPI posted the code to his over at FOFC? If you missed it, it was in a thread started by Sovstar.

Thanks, yeah, I am going to base my utility off of VPI's code. I don't have any experience using PHP or MySQL so I'm going to do my own thing (probably Delphi), but his code gave me a lot of good ideas.

Basics of IHOF rules:
[list6f52fe7]
[*6f52fe7]Picks are made with a utility that allows you to set a list of 20 players through drop down menu, or you can make your pick with the utility manually when you're on the clock
[*6f52fe7]Teams have 14 hours to make a pick
[*6f52fe7]If a team goes over once, their time is dropped to 8 hours, if they go over 8 their pick must be by list or a CPU pick will be made.
[/list6f52fe7]

That's about it. Being able to set a list of 20 players really helps, as 12-15 picks are occasionally made in a row. Also, there options for the list are "Off", "On", and "Use Once" which will use the list, but then turn it off once you make one pick. This is useful when you have to close picks, and want to target one position with the first, but don't want to make sure you don't pick the same position in the next pick.

The draft took us about a week to complete.

GE was going to write an utility too, TredWel was going to release his utility publicly and there was at least another one in progress of being written... we'll find one that works for us.

Now that I've thought about it some more I'm going to try to use VPI's utility. Why re-invent the wheel, right?

Does anyone know of a place where we can host it? Does this site (thecfl.net) have MySQL? I know Primal's not around so I'm guessing we can't count on that.

I found this site but it costs $5 - http://www.hostultra.com/

Does anyone else have any recommendations?

My site (http://www.kamilewicz.org), has nothing on it currently (well, it [id96c725]does[/id96c725] have a phpbb board for my Fantasy Football league, but that's kinda buried, and a picture gallery), and could be used. I know a bit about databases and php. I looked at VPI's utility and understood it, broadly.

Essentially, if someone said "take VPI's utility, modify it this way because the CFL phpbb board isn't there, create these tables and bam", I could probably figure it out.

My site is hosted at hostrocket, a reasonably reputable firm (for uptime), and I'm already bearing the hosting costs, so that wouldn't be a problem.

But if someone has a better idea, that's cool as well. I know I'm new here and you guys don't necessarily know me yet.

I have access to the MySQL account here on the site.

It's important that whatever hosting option we choose allows unlimited bandwidth. Any montly limit probably won't be enough.

If you guys need any help in modifying the code or just any sort of explanation as to what something is doing, please don't hesitate to ask.

Do we have bandwith limitations on this site?

Flere-imsaho, do you have bandwith limitations on your http://www.kamilewicz.org site?

If I remember correctly, it's 1Gb/month. Adding more is a trivial exercise, but I haven't priced it out.

Primal would be the one to answer any questions. I do not wnat to have to put any more stress on his serves than we have to.
